This was my first real film, a short film called Dreaming American and I was the 1st Assistant Director. I felt extremely lucky to be a part of this production because even though I have been a 1st AD a few times before on commercials; this was a movie and the direction I wanted my career to go in. I felt lucky for a few other reasons too. The Director and Producers I was working for and with had worked on some pretty high profile projects before. So, I felt like I was in a real good position to gain some great experience and connect with some great creative people.

So, it was a 7 day shoot and the days were obviously long. After the first day of work I went home to prepare for the next day and CRACK, my back went out. Now, this was Not from over working, not from lifting heavy objects, but from sitting down at my desk typing out the call sheet for day 2. I finished and printed and when I went to get up, I couldn’t. I could not get out of the chair. Well, I did eventually, but it hurt real bad. But I managed somehow to get up. But I had to walk slow and was hunched over like a boomerang. I made it to bed and slept it off. And wow, when I woke up, the next day was different. Now, I could not get out of bed. At least before in the chair I was half way there. So, this took some time and more pain. But I made it and made it into the city.

The pain lasted all week but with stretching and slow walking, I turned the harsh unbearable pain into my momentum and just worked through it. Though I couldn’t tie my shoes or pick up things I had dropped. It really sucked when I dropped half of my sandwich and couldn’t get it before the 15 second rule expired. But I got it and ate it anyway. From then I made sure I had other people do all the bending for me. But the production was fun and the very long hours did fly by. My back slowly got better; about a month later. But I am extremely happy that I got to work on this short film, even if I had broken my back. And now I don’t eat sandwiches. It’s a bread thing.
